Things change. My interwebs 2.0 artistic efforts these days are either going into places with richer sharing features and community (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Tumblr) or especially my new blog, Garfield Grows Weed.
About that....
For decades now--since the cartoon first appeared in our local paper circa 1980--I have been fascinated by Garfield. My fascination first took the form of teaching myself how to draw him and his fellow characters (Jon, Odie, Nermal, Lyman [RIP]) at age ~9. By 5th and 6th grade, I'd written my own (albeit short and fairly lame) Garfield book, and I wanted to "grow up" to be a cartoonist. By college, my brother, Aaron, and I were taking white-out pens and fine-point art pens to real Garfield books and twisting the pictures and dialogues into sex-, drug-, and rock-n-roll-oriented meanings. (That was the golden age of art-within-art criticism/parody, a la Beavis and Butthead, Mystery Science Theater 3000, etc.) Jon became Jong, Odie became Orie or Die, and so on. In the years since, I have refined my techniques of détourning Garfield books by taking them via scans into Photoshop, even going so far as painstakingly constructing, letter by letter in FontLab Studio, a Jim Davis font.
So, I figure it's about time I began to broadcast some of my Garfield alterations to the world. Hence, the new blog (sample below). They are, of course, NSFW and for mature audiences. Much Love. Enjoy!
